Chapter 13: Militant geography and frontier vigilantism: Australia, 'Australian Antarctic Territory' and the 'southern flank'

Klaus Dodds

In December 2011, two well-known Australian commentators Sam Bateman and Anthony Bergin wrote a piece for The Australian newspaper entitled ëNew dawn in Antarctic awarenessí. The gist of their article was that Australia needed develop a greater awareness of what might be happening in the ëAustralian Antarctic Territoryí (AAT). The object of their anxiety was explicit. The location of polar research stations was not innocent, however. According to the authors, the bases might well have a dual-use capability, with particular reference to using such establishments to help gather signals and electronic intelligence and link up with satellites circling the earth.
