Chapter 10: The role of criminal defence lawyers in China: an empirical study of D County, S Province
Zuo Weimin and Ma Jinghua
Whether Chinese lawyers can play a role in criminal defence, and if so, to what extent and through what means is a question that has undeniably drawn the attention of theorists and practitioners. From the departure point of systemic flaws or experience, many scholars find that Chinese lawyers face difficulties in criminal defence and cannot easily play their role; other commentators feel that the defence system for lawyers, while imperfect, still allows them to play a role. The actual situation merits in-depth research. To this end, the project team directed by the writers (hereafter referred to as the project team) focused on the substantive role of criminal defence.
