Chapter 1: Thinking and writing for scholarly publication in entrepreneurship

Alain Fayolle

As any researcher, entrepreneurship scholars are aiming at getting published in good academic journals. They have a wide range of choices both in the fields of management and entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship scholars may also target journals in other disciplines such as psychology, sociology, philosophy, finance or economics. Obviously, a key question is in which journal(s) could we submit our research? But, probably much more important issues are in relation to why should we publish our work and on what topics and research objects/domains? In this introductory chapter, we bring insights and answers to these questions based on the literature and our knowledge in entrepreneurship. The chapter is organized as follows. Our first part is an attempt to answer the above questions. In a first section, we analyze the main reasons leading entrepreneurship scholars to get published in academic journals. Of course, the ëpublish or perishí logic plays a role, but there are also other arguments in relation to our social role and mission. The second section is around the choice of research topics in our field. What kind of topics could be usefully studied and why? Finally, our third section is around the choice of academic journals.
