Chapter 2: Getting published in entrepreneurship journals
Getting published in entrepreneurship journals is an increasingly highly competitive process. As entrepreneurship as a discipline grows in popularity among students, more and more schools in a growing number of countries are recruiting faculty who are expected to publish quality academic research. The result has been a sharp rise in submissions to journals as was observed in Chapter 1. In parallel with this development, there has also been a sharp increase in submissions to general management journals in which entrepreneurship scholars may be aiming to publish. Unfortunately, the space available in journals has remained relatively constant so that acceptance rates have fallen commensurately. By no means all the increase in the volume of submissions is accompanied by an increase in the quality of articles. Much of the influx of papers is coming from less developed regions or from schools without a research tradition where faculty lack rigorous research training (Clark et al., 2013). Yet, the situation is changing rapidly and there is no room for complacency. In this environment it becomes important for entrepreneurship scholars to ëup their gameí by developing their expertise if they are to be successful in publishing in leading journals. This chapter and the next contribute to developing entrepreneurship scholarsí publishing expertise by focusing on the processes involved in getting published. In this chapter, I begin by discussing the development of a publication strategy and targeting journals. Details are then provided on the specific elements to take into account in writing and preparing a paper for submission.
