International Perspectives on Business Innovation and Disruption in the Creative Industries

Film, Video and Photography

Edited by Robert DeFillippi and Patrik Wikström

This volume examines how disruptive innovations are reshaping industry boundaries and challenging conventional business models and practices in the industries for film, video and photography. The thirteen chapters provide a rich and diverse account of these processes from a wide range of country contexts. The book fills the gap between the study of disruption by innovation scholars in business schools and the recognition of disruption by academics and practitioners from non-business school disciplines and contexts, including the broader social sciences.

Chapter 13: Users as content creators, aggregators and distributors at Citilab Living Lab

Seppo Leminen, Mika Westerlund, Laia Sánchez and Artur Serra

This study focuses on understanding users’ roles in media co-creation at Citilab Living Lab by exploring the Social Media Lab methodology in four different media cases. The living lab is a prominent but under-researched area of open innovation. The cases show that media provide fertile ground for developing innovative solutions using a citizen-centered design approach and for fostering the co-creation of content. The study shows that it is possible to open the culture of innovation to the general public by focusing on user-generated content and user-generated applications and services. The study provides recommendations to steer media production in a new direction.
