Chapter 3: Job demands in a changing world of work

The world of work has changed rapidly over the last few decades. Important drivers of the changes are the dissemination of information and communication technologies (ICTs) and socioeconomic transformations. As a result, employees have to cope with new job demands. The chapter analyzes the causes for new demands at work, and describes work intensification and intensified autonomy as the most important new demands at work. Globalization, rising competition and informatization are described as the most important background drivers for new job demands. Next, intensification of work is described as an important hindrance demand. Subjectification of work and redefinition of boundaries between work and non-work domains, often described as ‘boundaryless’ work, are analyzed in their role for increasing autonomy demands. Finally, resources and strategies in dealing with new job demands and challenges for job (re)design are presented.
