Chapter 4: The last career transition? A gendered perspective on retirement
Retirement, understood as a process of final disengagement from the labour market and paid employment, is currently being re-examined and rethought. Specifically, the impact of rapidly ageing populations in Western industrialized societies has increased the pressure on people to extend their working lives beyond the traditional age of retirement. This chapter explores the surrounding debates from a gendered perspective, focusing on contrasts in the retirement experiences of men and women and the impact of retirement on gender relations. It draws on the accounts of women in the United Kingdom at, or approaching, retirement age to illustrate the issues of choice, control and constraint that are involved in transitioning (or not) into retirement, and it concludes by briefly considering the implications of this overview for individuals, for organizations and for institutions more widely.
