Chapter 20: A conversation about geology and tourism in a remote area of Australia

Jean F. Johnston and Martin J. Van Kranendonk

The Geological Survey of Western Australia (GSWA) has published a field guide to six geological drive trails radiating from Marble Bar. The book is called Discovery Trails to Early Earth – a Traveller’s Guide to the East Pilbara of Western Australia. The guide has been a success and has been reprinted. Its achievement has shown there is an appetite for geological stories written in a simple, stylish and informative way accompanied by colourful graphics and images. We tease out some of the threads that combine to make a popular geotourism product.
