Chapter 4: Packing and preparing

Chiemi Yagi and John R. Pearce

The anticipation phase of travel involves a range of planning and preparing behaviours, which have been explored only in a limited way within tourism research. Key aspects of travel preparedness include the physical activities of packing which can be considered as an exercise not only in logistics but a series of acts defining identity underpinned by a vision of the tourists’ likely behaviour. This chapter presents the existing literature on packing in tourism research and seeks to further explore the logistics of packing through two independent studies. The first of these studies explores the online advice surrounding packing for Japanese travellers; the second investigates the social identity issues revealed in the preparation process. Additional processes for preparing to depart that cover medical and health issues and the creation of personal capital to guide the tourist are considered.
