Chapter 13: International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
The chapter focuses on the relationship between the EU and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). It discusses EU competence in the field of nuclear energy and addresses the issue of the EU’s legal status in the IAEA. The EU is not a member of the IAEA, but as the chapter shows, the EU can influence its activities through agreements: agreements to which the IAEA is a party; treaties under the auspices of the IAEA; and IAEA-related treaties that give the IAEA an important role. The chapter also shows that the EU’s participation and cooperation with the IAEA varies depending on policy area.
