Handbook of the Sharing Economy
Edited by Russell W. Belk, Giana M. Eckhardt and Fleura Bardhi
Abstract
This chapter presents the essential features of Facebook group Uwaga! _mieciarka jedzie, which is focused on gathering and sharing information about free resources and redistribution of shunned or superfluous items. First, it aims to examine the group’s mode of conduct through the lens of classical anthropology concepts concerning rules governing the gift exchanges. Second, it sketches out how value is created within the group and, by doing so, explains the group’s success. The end result is an indication of the hybrid nature of the actions undertaken by group members, based on cooperation on one hand, and vigorous competition on the other. As it turns out, the group is driven by a blend of different logics, including self-interest, reciprocity, sustainability, as well as the intrinsically fun nature of this digitally enabled hunt for free stuff.
