Chapter 3: Big data and application

Patrick Mikalef

Abstract

With big data analytics reaching a point of technological maturity, the attention has shifted towards how organizations can leverage the potential offered by such technologies, and the ways by which they can harness their potential to drive business value. While much has been written over the past few years on the potential and challenges of incorporating big data analytics in business operations, there is still a lack of a consolidated view on empirical findings, and what research and practical implications they can lead to. The chapter talks about the potential and business value big data analytics can deliver, the main aspects organizations should consider when deploying big data analytics to support operations, as well as what challenges are typically presented during such implementations. The aim is to outline some key issues that surround the organizational adoption and diffusion of big data analytics technologies, and to highlight some future promising areas for further research.
