Introduction to A Research Agenda for Economic Anthropology
Full access

Economic anthropology and the world that the sub-discipline studies have changed markedly over the past 50 years. This chapter sketches those changes, which are the background to the chapters in this collection. In the world those changes include globalisation and the rise of neoliberal thought and policy, as well as the economic crisis of 2008 and the Great Recession and government austerity that followed. In the sub-discipline there has been a weakening of postmodern culturalist anthropology and a growing interest in structures in the economic realm and elsewhere. This chapter concludes by describing the way that the volume emerged and briefly describes its substantive chapters.
