Chapter 16: International political sociology of interventions

In bringing International Political Sociology to bear on the issue of intervention, this chapter looks at interventionist practices transversally. Such an outlook brings out an interstitial site which is located in the blind spot of the opposition between global experts and local brokers. Indeed, local and international staff of international organisations equally partake in the social field where interventions are carried out on the ground, on a day-to-day basis. Such a space revolves around the circulation of capitals encapsulated in international projects. This chapter advances a theoretical framework (the transnationalisation of bureaucratic field) and a methodology (Multiple Correspondence Analysis) to bring under examination the practical logic and the positional structure of those fields of implementation that sit at the core of current international interventions. By way of illustration, it brings out the fault line of interventions that have targeted the inter-state borders of Central Asia since the collapse of the USSR.
