Chapter 46: Regional legal responses to terrorism in Asia and the Pacific

Rohan Gunaratna and Gloria Cheung

Abstract

This chapter discusses the regional legal responses to terrorism by first marking out the trends of terrorism and domestic governmental responses. Then it details the progress in regional organizations, specifically the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), and Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), as well as examining the limitations of their responses thus far. Lastly the chapter identifies and elaborates on the common challenges faced by the Asia-Pacific region as a whole in addressing the threat of terrorism.
