Chapter 16: How to teach students from a range of different countries

Abstract

The varied mix of international students that come to study in the UK makes teaching in the country a dynamically interesting job. However, teaching cohorts that have a large mix of students from various countries could also pose its own unique set of challenges for people that are tasked with effectively teaching them. In this chapter, I present three teaching strategies that ensure that classes consisting of students from different countries are inclusively taught. First, I demonstrate how actively recognising international students during class sessions dramatically increases their inclusion into properly designed teaching and learning activities. Second, I go on to suggest ways in which this active recognition can be executed in a manner that also includes the domestic students present in the taught cohort. Finally, I propose methods that can be used to tailor assessments so that they are more inclusive of both international and domestic students.
