Chapter 44: The power to write

Melika Shirmohammadi

Abstract

Almost as soon as I started my doctoral studies, my writing stalled. I was surprised because I had engaged with research as early as my undergraduate years and even co-authored four journal articles before starting my doctorate. What was wrong with me? My writing soul had caught an infection. Like many doctoral students, I sat at my computer hour after hour, trying to figure out, “What should I write?” or “Is this good enough?” Academic writing seemed daunting, isolating, and a monster that must be defeated through one-on-one combat. What I didn’t realize was that I was not alone. My peers and even my professors faced the same struggles.
