Chapter 7: Deconstructing climate science denial
Restricted access

Implementing effective responses to climate misinformation requires understanding of the strategies, scientific arguments and rhetorical techniques of denialist arguments. This chapter will review content analyses of various corpora containing climate misinformation, including conservative think-tank publications, blogs, social media posts, and mainstream media articles. While individual studies offer piece-meal insights into various aspects of climate misinformation, the overall body of literature paints a comprehensive landscape of arguments targeting climate science and solutions. Developing a taxonomy of denialist arguments enables the construction of a history of climate misinformation, highlighting ebbs and flows of different talking points and strategies. Finally, in order to develop responses to misinformation, one needs to identify the strategies employed in climate misinformation to distort scientific facts and mislead the public. This chapter provides an overview of rhetorical strategies, which can be incorporated into refutational messages deployed in response to climate misinformation.
