Italian Mafias Today
Territory, Business and Politics
Edited by Felia Allum, Isabella Clough Marinaro and Rocco Sciarrone
Abstract
This chapter first traces historical strategies of denial by members of the judiciary and civil society and the role that this has played in enabling the ‘Ndrangheta to evolve into one of Italy’s most wealthy, dangerous, expansive and efficient mafias today. It focuses on the most recent forms of social development within the organisation, highlighting how it is able to negotiate deep-rooted values with an adaptation to contemporary pressures. It thus emphasises the changing roles of women and offspring, evolving civil society attitudes, and the increasing reluctance by politicians and clergy to associate with clan members. Finally, it explores some of the new communicative strategies introduced through social media by younger generations of ‘Ndrangheta members.
