Chapter 15: Journalling and memoing: reflexive qualitative research tools
Very often qualitative methodology texts inform novice researchers to adopt a ‘reflexive stance’ throughout a study through the use of journaling and memoing. However, literature concerning how journals and memos are used within qualitative research is scant. This Chapter reveals how journaling and memos guided and informed a study focused on Australian local government provision of community recreation for people with impairments. Examples of raw, unedited sections of journal notes and memos are used to identify how each form of reflexive writing guided the research process, analysis and findings. In addition, tips and suggestions are provided to assist novice qualitative researchers with developing an understanding of the various aspects of journal and memo writing. The Chapter concludes with a call for editors to increase opportunities for journal and memo entries to be included in research publications.
