Chapter 1: Introduction to Urban Violence, Resilience and Security
Full access

The introduction chapter to Urban Violence, Resilience, and Security: Governance Responses in the Global South presents the key themes and context for the book. The increasing influence of urbanization as a key process across the globe is causing more attention to be paid to circumstances of violence and human security. While prior research on urbanization has yielded binary concepts including order versus disorder and fragility versus resilience, the contribution of this book is to call for a relational and grounded approach to understanding the responses to urban violence that occur in communities across the Global South. The goal of the chapter and the book is to construct a framework to understand the roots of urban violence and how the 'ordinary' interactions between citizens, the state, and non-state actors shape urban life.
