p. xiBringing this body of work together has taken nearly five years. People are busy and good contributors have many other things on their hands. We hope that the final product is useful as a reference source and complements the vast amount of material that is now available on the World Wide Web. The advantage we think the product has is that the entries are by named authorities which allows readers to have some guarantee of their quality and there is extensive cross-referencing that allows for important linkages to be chased up. We also hope that the quality of the drafting makes the various items accessible to the widest possible audience.
In putting this volume together we are very grateful for the time and effort contributed by the contributors – without them there would be no Dictionary.
